Two cases, LAPD working (?) through the pandemic, Ballard & Bosch against the world, and—of course—a dog!
Karrie,
Harry Bosch helps tie his old case in to help the night shift’s Renee’ Ballard again。
Roberta,

Audrey Marcusen McMacken,
I love Renee Ballard and these books。
Cheryle,
I have been reading Michael Connelly books from the beginning and always anticipate reading the newest。 I have never been disappointed, the only one that came close was the introduction to the lawyer Mickey Haller who took a little getting used to。 The only trouble with reading such a great author is I read the latest and then have to wait for quite a while until the next one comes out。 Some people do not like the addition of Renee Ballard to the Bosch series, but I like her and think it adds to I have been reading Michael Connelly books from the beginning and always anticipate reading the newest。 I have never been disappointed, the only one that came close was the introduction to the lawyer Mickey Haller who took a little getting used to。 The only trouble with reading such a great author is I read the latest and then have to wait for quite a while until the next one comes out。 Some people do not like the addition of Renee Ballard to the Bosch series, but I like her and think it adds to the progression of Bosch as he ages。There's chaos in Hollywood on New Year's Eve。 Working her graveyard shift, LAPD Detective Renée Ballard seeks shelter at the end of the countdown to wait out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air。 As reports start to roll in of shattered windshields and other damage, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party。It doesn't take long for Ballard to determine that the deadly bullet could not have fallen from the sky。 Ballard’s investigation leads her to look into another unsolved murder—a case at one time worked by Detective Harry Bosch。Ballard and Bosch team up once again to find out where the old and new cases intersect。 All the while they must look over their shoulders。 The killer who has stayed undetected for so long knows they are coming after him。 。。。more
Jjean,
This book just did not carry the interest for me as most Michael Connelly books - I do not care for Detective Renee Ballard - and really way to "political" in action & attitudes。。。such as mask or not? - elbow bumping ? - etc。 This book just did not carry the interest for me as most Michael Connelly books - I do not care for Detective Renee Ballard - and really way to "political" in action & attitudes。。。such as mask or not? - elbow bumping ? - etc。 。。。more
Marlan,

Yves,
Superlative characters with a humanity that engages the reader into the story from the first page; from the first word。
Mickey,
book 4
Mark Edlund,
Mystery series - Ballard and Bosch team up in a pandemic ravaged, defunded LAPD world。 Ballard's fellow cops are disillusioned and are looking for a way out。 There is a gang shooting related to an old case of Bosch。 The Midnight Men are attacking women in a brutal manner。 The crimes are not related but both are resolved。 Ballard gets a new dog and maybe a new career?Pharmacy reference - mention of a RiteAid pharmacy in a strip mall。No Canadian references。 Mystery series - Ballard and Bosch team up in a pandemic ravaged, defunded LAPD world。 Ballard's fellow cops are disillusioned and are looking for a way out。 There is a gang shooting related to an old case of Bosch。 The Midnight Men are attacking women in a brutal manner。 The crimes are not related but both are resolved。 Ballard gets a new dog and maybe a new career?Pharmacy reference - mention of a RiteAid pharmacy in a strip mall。No Canadian references。 。。。more
David Smith,
Great detective work, welcome back, Harry!
Roy McCraw,
My new favorite Michael Connelly novel。 Renee Ballard is absolutely terrific。 She deserves her own TV series and should be played by Reese Witherspoon。
Wena,
Ballard is good by I miss Bosch!
Patty Jaacks,
Good continuation of the Renee Ballard stories。 Loved that Bosch is back and heavily involved in this plot。 Connelly always provides a satisfying read as he discloses the underworld of Los Angeles。
Suzanne King,
always love Harry BoschHis thrillers are always fun to read。 Makes you sorry about the state of our police departments though。 I'm sure they are all caught up in red tape like any govt organization。 always love Harry BoschHis thrillers are always fun to read。 Makes you sorry about the state of our police departments though。 I'm sure they are all caught up in red tape like any govt organization。 。。。more
Wayne,
Probably a 3。5 star read。 The first half seemed to focus on all the boring parts of procedural policework, though it definitely picked up in the second half。 I really like Ballard, but this was the weakest of her books so far。 The author's political views came through a few times, and I think in time they will really date this book。 But it would be unrealistic to write a book that takes place in 2020-2021 and not acknowledge the attitudes towards police at the time。 I'll keep reading Connelly。 Probably a 3。5 star read。 The first half seemed to focus on all the boring parts of procedural policework, though it definitely picked up in the second half。 I really like Ballard, but this was the weakest of her books so far。 The author's political views came through a few times, and I think in time they will really date this book。 But it would be unrealistic to write a book that takes place in 2020-2021 and not acknowledge the attitudes towards police at the time。 I'll keep reading Connelly。 。。。more
Adam,
This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Two interesting cases, involving a pair of rapists in the midnight men, and the murder of a former gang member, who was running a mechanics on the stroke of the new year。The book is classic Michael Connelly, where in this case the police force become its own character。 It reflects the changes in attitude and approaches the police force is undergoing, particularly as a results of the pandemic and protests since the Floyd murder。
Danielle,
Not my kind of story although I finished it。
Steve Wall,
Michael Connelly is a great writer of crime fiction。 Harry Bosch is one of the all-time best characters。 Renee Ballard is not in the same league。 That being said, this is a very fine novel with a real exciting final third。 If Ballard could get ride of the huge chip on her shoulder she would be a better character。
David Morgan,
Excellent, excellent, excellent!!!This is one of Michael's best。 Expertly plotted, perfect pacing and so well crafted。 I finished it in one sitting。If you're new to this series it is not too late to start at the beginning。 Even if you haven't read any of the Bosch novels there's enough back story given to keep you from feeling you're missing something。Simply the best! Barb,
another good oneMichael Connelly has done it again。 Only suggestion is Bosch and Ballard are more of a team。 Look forward to the Ballard and Bosch detective agency。
Lane,
Another good entry in the series。 This story tackles the current issues (covid, BLM, police de-funding) in the plot of Renee following two crimes that she solves with the help of Bosch and the lack of support from LAPD。 Can not wait for the next story。
Antonio Parrilla,
Mich,
Continuing to provide an entertaining read, this book features Detective Rene Ballard, who works the night shift in LA,and throws in Harry Bosch every once in a while as a consultant。I suspect it’s more for marketing reasons as Bosch is very popular in his own right both in books and TV。 Mostly a police procedural with turf battles within the department has Ballard working on two cases- serial rapists and connecting a murder to a cold case from Bosch’s days。
Mark,
Michael Connelly writes with such clarity and authenticity- Ballard and Bosch remain strong and principled characters and continue to stand up for the victims of crime in pursuing justice for them regardless of the damage it may cause their careers。 In contrast, the LAPD seems cautious and loathe to take action for fear of further tarnishing its reputation。 In fact, this novel feels very political and relevant as well as being an exciting read。
Rosie,
Excellent as usual
Bonnie,
A good read。 I like this author and the characters。
Mary Ann,
Love, 💕 love ❤️ loved it。 Ballard and Bosch are a wonderful team。 The book takes in defund the police, Covid and huge increase in crime along with the effects of these problems on the police! Can’t wait for the next episode!
Francis Telegadas,
This author never disappoints。 Loved the story and characters。
